Fred Haise – Astronaut
Fred Haise, Former NASA and Apollo 13 Astronaut. Fred was one of three crew members to be part of the ill fated Apollo 13 crew that were destined to reach the moon but a tragedy struck and made the mission one of NASA’s most successful failures. Fred is a test pilot, astronaut, author and wonderful role model.
At 102 years old, he got onto the Zoom call and he is a master story teller! Would you believe that he has invented over 800 toys! He has over 300 patents! One of the first toys he invented was the wind up chattering teeth! Kristen Neuschafer won the Golden Globe Race and became the first woman ever to do so. Non stop, solo, sailing around the world! 235days alone! If you have watched the Netflix series Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission To Space then you will know Dr Proctor and part of her journey to being an astronaut. Dr. Proctor is a geoscientist, explorer, space artist, and astronaut. She is the mission pilot for the Inspiration4 all-civilian orbital mission to space. She is also one of The Explorer’s Club 50: Fifty People Changing the World. Her motto is called Space2inspire where she encourages people to use their unique, one-of-a-kind strengths, and passion to inspire those within their reach and beyond. She believes that we need to actively strive for a J.E.D.I. space: a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive space as we advance human spaceflight. Dr Proctor is one of only 2 black women to fly to space in the last 13 yrs and she is the 1st black woman mission pilot.
Dr Lori Glaze
Dr. Lori Glaze is the Director of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate’s Planetary Science Division. Planetary Science is focused on space flight missions and scientific research that address fundamental questions of solar system formation and evolution, including understanding planetary environments that can (or could have in the past) support life. Before coming to NASA Headquarters, Dr. Glaze served as the chief of the Planetary Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Laboratory at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and as the Deputy Director of Goddard’s Solar System Exploration Division. Her research interests include physical processes in terrestrial and planetary volcanology, atmospheric transport and diffusion processes, and geologic mass movements. Her work focuses on data analysis and theoretical modeling of surface processes on all the terrestrial solar system bodies, particularly the Earth, Venus, Mars, the Moon, and Io. She develops statistical, analytical, and data management methods in support of physical process modeling and develops applications of diverse sets of terrestrial and planetary remote sensing data. Dr. Glaze was a member of the Inner Planets Panel for the 2013–2022 Decadal Survey (Visions and Voyages) and had a role on the Executive Committee of NASA’s Venus Exploration Analysis Group (VEXAG) for several years, serving as the group’s Chair from 2013–2017. Dr. Glaze was a member of the Planetary Science Subcommittee from 2011 to 2013. She has been involved with many NASA-sponsored Venus mission concept formulation studies, including as a member of the Venus Flagship Science and Technology Definition Team (2009), as Science Champion for the Venus Mobile Explorer (2010), and Co-Science Champion for the Venus Intrepid Tessera Lander (2010). Until her move to Headquarters, she also was the Principal Investigator of the Deep Atmosphere Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging (DAVINCI). Dr. Glaze was born in Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas, Arlington with a BA and MS in Physics. She received a PhD in Environmental Science from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. She has also previously worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and at Proxemy Research, as Vice President and Senior Research Scientist.

Adeena is a Mission Architect at Northrop Grumman with 25 years of experience involving all aspects of satellite, and now space station, design and development. Adeena is also the author of The Robot Galaxy Series of books, a podcast co-host of The BIG Sci-Fi Podcast, and a STEM speaker, using her lifelong love of science fiction and science to inspire others through writing and speaking about robots, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, exoplanets and more. She received Bachelor’s of Science degrees in Physics and in Astronomy from the University of Maryland and a Master’s of Science in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology.
2022
Our first interview of 2022 was with Herb Baker. Herb recently retired from NASA after 42 years of service. He spent most of his career at the Johnson Space Center supporting the Space Shuttle, Space Station, and Orion Programs but also worked at the Kennedy Space Center and NASA Headquarters. His last position was serving as the Manager of the Operations Support Office which provided support to the Flight Operations Directorate and included support to the Astronaut Office, Mission Control operations, NASA’s Aircraft Operations at Ellington Airport, and astronaut training. In 2010, he was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and he is currently on the Board of Directors of the NASA Alumni League. Click here to watch the interview

Morgan Irons (she/her/they/them) is the Founder and Chief Science Officer of Deep Space Ecology Inc., a space and agricultural business startup working to solve the challenges of food security on Earth and in deep space. She is also a Soil and Crop Sciences PhD candidate in the Lehmann Lab at Cornell University, where her research focuses on microbial-adhesion mechanisms and organo-mineral interactions in soil aggregates and their effects on soil organic carbon sequestration under Earth gravity and microgravity conditions. Her research has led to the development of the quasi-closed, agroecological system model; soil management methodology for degraded regolith conditions, and the experimentation of gravity and rocket effects on natural Earth soils and biochar growth media on the International Space Station and on a Blue Origin parabolic flight. Morgan is a 2020 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, a Carl Sagan Institute Fellow, a Norfolk Institute Fellow, the 2019 Ken Souza Memorial Spaceflight Award recipient, a 2017 Vice Motherboard Human of the Year, and a 2017 Brooke Owens Fellow.

Hip Hop M.D. Maynard Okereke – Using Pop Culture to Make STEM Fun
Maynard Okereke, better known as the Hip Hop M.D., graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Civil Engineering. His passion for science and entertainment, along with his curiosity for new innovation has taken him through an incredible life journey.
Noticing a lack of minority involvement in the S.T.E.M. fields, he created Hip Hop Science with the goal of encouraging minorities and youth to pursue more advanced career paths. His background in engineering, acting, business, and credible work within the music industry as an artist, make him uniquely qualified to engage on a wide variety of topics from an entertaining perspective. This is highly reflected in his weekly vlogs and daily social media posts which provide both humorous and informative #SciComm content.

Trained as an experimental scientist, Dr Hecht constantly seeks to combine his expertise in development of instrumentation with the scientific explorations that use that instrumentation. In addition to his role as Associate Director of Research Management at MIT Haystack, he lead the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE) on board the NASA Perseverance Mars rover, and he is part of the management team for the Event Horizon Telescope that images supermassive black holes from Earth. It’s hard to imagine two more different space enterprises!
As Principal Investigator for the MOXIE payload on NASA’s Mars 2020 Rover (Perseverance) mission, his job is to lead the MOXIE Science Team through operations on Mars, analysis of data from the mission and from our models in the laboratory at Haystack, and communication of the important findings to the scientific community and to the public. MOXIE’s job is to demonstrate that we can reliably convert carbon dioxide to oxygen on Mars, and to learn all we can about how to extend that design to a full-scale system that will someday provide liquid oxygen for a rocket that will lift our astronauts off the surface of Mars to rendezvous with their ride home. As the Deputy Project Director of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, he helps lead the project through an annual cycle of observations and data analysis, which continually improves our understanding of black holes and tests key principles of general relativity and stellar evolution.

Imagine NASA asking you to spy on it’s leading Shuttle contractor only later to be spied upon by the KGB? Imagine being personal and professional friends with astronauts only to see them perish before your eyes in spacecraft you helped build? Imagine writing an expose about the dangerous shortcomings of NASA that becomes the subject of Congressional oversight? And imagine taking on the hierarchy of NASA, Congress and the White House to save and privatize the Space Shuttle from dismantling and carting off to museums before it’s time. Dr Kuznetz is a 50-year veteran of the space program with advanced degrees from Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley. He holds 8 US patents, has been nominated to receive NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Metal, is an inventor, entrepreneur and currently teaches Mars Spacesuit design at UC Berkeley. He likes to plays keyboard at piano bars in his spare time.

May 2020 – present
Following the successful establishment of the Mars Sample Return programme together with NASA and initiation of flight project developments for the European contributions, I have handed over my responsibilities on MSR to new management in May 2020. I have now returned to the role of leading the strategic planning of ESA’s future Mars exploration programme as well as coordinating early phase studies of new and exciting Mars missions that could follow Mars Sample Return in the decade of the 2030’s as we move ever closer towards the goal of enabling the human exploration of Mars.
January 2016 – May 2020
The programme I was working in at ESA (the future Mars mission preparation programme) moved to a new Directorate called the Human and Robotic Exploration Directorate and I moved along with it to continue my work in preparing for a future ESA Mars exploration mission after the Exomars rover mission. Since 2016, we have been in discussions and joint studies with NASA on a potential Mars Sample Return campaign of missions to be conducted potentially in the late 2020’s to return a set of samples from Mars that will be selected and cached by a preceding NASA rover mission called Mars 2020, which is due to be launch in 2020. I am now leading the ESA preparation activities so that we could be ready to make a proposal to our Member States at the end of 2019 for funding a mission development starting in 2020.

CEO Explore Mars Europe – Artemis Westenberg
On the 25th of May I interviewed Artemis Westenberg, the CEO of Explore Mars Europe. Artemis wears many other hats as well. She is the director and owner of SpaceWorks. Over the years, she has become an expert on the geology of Mars and NASA’s Mars Science Laboratories, Curiosity and its predecessors Spirit & Opportunity. The interview with Yvette Gonzalez took place at 6pm (Cape Town time) on 23 April. Yvette has a long resume connected to many exciting aspects of Space. Raised in El Paso, Texas, Yvette is a Human Resilience expert and Scientist-Astronaut Candidate. With 20 years of Development/Emergency Response experience rebuilding communities in active war, conflict, natural disasters, and epidemiological outbreaks, she now focuses her skills on Human Factors in space technology and experience. Her transition is an example of the possibility of commercial and private sector space opportunity.
She is an active member of the International Astronautical Federation, Association of Spaceflight Professionals, International Lunar Exploratory Working Group’s EuroMoonMars team, Moon Village Association, Project POSSUM, and trained with the Austrian Space Forum (OeWF). Yvette contributes to Lunar science conducted with the @ESA ESA_LAB@ project, IgLuna, an Ice Habitat. She works through these networks to help prepare and plan Moon and Mars analogs and science, building more knowledge and technology around human spaceflight.

The Partisan Song – Global Collaboration event 15 March 2019 – – a group of Eastern European schools join Herzlia High School in a joint activity about the Holocaust. The schools learnt about the partisans and the Partisan Song.

We were joined by his family and we got some insights as to how Luke’s journey has been processed by them and the advice they shared with us.

On Monday 11 Sept at 6pm (GMT + 2) I will be interviewing Bren Bataclan. Bren Bataclan refused to be drowned in a sea of cold faces in Boston when he moved there a few years ago.
Determined to turn the frowns upside down, Bren sneaked through the streets of Boston and used his colorful artworks to bribe the “snobby” Bostonians into smiling.
“This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often,” an attached note on Bren’s artwork would read. He also launched a personal website where the lucky bribe-taker can post his/her feedback. Now four years after leaving his cheery acrylic critters in parks, benches, libraries, train stations, street corners, among others, Bren’s “Smile Project” has spread all around. On Wed 17 May, I interviewed Wanda Diaz Merced. Wanda is a well known and respected Astronomer. She studies the universe and observes the regular things that astronomers observe. The only difference? Wanda uses her ears and not her eyes. Wanda is blind!

Christian was born and raised on the south side of Chicago in a working-class neighborhood called Blue Island, the birthplace of the American white power skinhead movement. At 14 years old, Picciolini became entrenched in the first neo-Nazi skinhead gang in the United States. From violence to weapons, Picciolini immersed himself in the racist skinhead culture at an early age and quickly became one of the movement’s most respected leaders and musical influencers. In 2009, Christian co-founded Life After Hate. He went on to earn a degree in International Relations from DePaul University in Chicago, started his own global multimedia company, and was appointed a member of the Chicago Grammy Rock Committee. In 2016, he won an Emmy® Award for directing and producing ExitUSA’s “There is life after hate” PSA.
Scout Champion and activist, Sydney Ireland is challenging the Boy Scouts of USA. Sydney has been barred from achieving the highest levels in the Boy Scout Association of America because she is female. She feels this is discrimination against girls and is taking them on.
