Living Maths at HOUT BAY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Welcome to an edutaining session of problem solving, critical thinking skills, brainteasers, maths games and awesome enrichment from the crazy facilitators at Living Maths.

The world around us is changing rapidly and the 4th industrial revolution has already begun.  AI is now part of our everyday existence, future careers are making way for new ones that have never existed before.  Education will need to evolve too!  Effectively, students will need a powerful set of skills to participate in the world around them.  Problem solving, creative thinking and critical thinking skills are on the top of that list.  We want to develop independent thinkers who can think outside of the box and might have a desire to run a small to medium size country.

In the Loving Maths workshops we will introduce children in EY2 & PYP1-2 to the exciting world of problem solving, critical and lateral thinking skills for the 3 Saturday sessions. The 1 hour morning sessions are fun problem based activities that involve student engagement and teamwork.  These lessons will be story based with fun problems that require the hero of the story to be assisted by the students in the class.  The sessions are not too focused on correct answers but rather the methods of obtaining them.  We stress that the journey is always more important than the destination.  Students are encouraged to think creatively and they are introduced to different methods of solving problems.  We often include a fun game or two to strengthen the knowledge and concepts that are covered during sessions.  Students will leave with prolonged smiles and newly fired neurons!

In the Living Maths 1 Workshop we will introduce children from PYP3 – PYP6 to the exciting world of problem solving and brainteasers over 3 Saturdays. The workshop is a fun introduction to problem solving and critical thinking.  Students will be presented with problems that have one solution, many solutions or no solutions.  They will be challenged to look at problems with a different set of “eyes”.  They will be exposed to the different methods that one can use to solve problems and they will also be given a chance to articulate their solutions.  The content is fun and engaging and the students will experience spontaneous and uncontrollable smiles.

In the Living Maths 2 Workshop we will introduce children from MYC1 -MYC3 to the exciting world of problem solving and brainteasers over 3 Saturdays. The workshop is a high level and fun introduction to advanced problem solving and critical thinking.  Students will be presented with problems that have one solution, many solutions or no solutions.  They will be challenged to look at problems with a different set of “eyes”.  It is essential that the students be given a chance to identify a problem, suggest potential solutions and then express the most acceptable solution in a way that demonstrates understanding.  The content is fun and engaging and the students will undergo a life-changing metamorphosis and they could begin dancing for joy at random hours of the day.
