Sinenjongo
Livng Maths, Rotary Blouberg and INVESTEC have teamed up to make a major impact in the Joe Slovo community in Cape Town. The project works with learners from grade 10-12 and aims to improves the levels of maths education as well as produce more passes in maths at school.
The project has had to deal with many obstacles along the way, to mention a few:
In 2003, Sinenjongo was a container school and it shared its premises with the local primary school. Effectively, this meant that learners in High School only received half a day's worth of tuition. The classrooms were delapidated containers with broken furniture and each container had to house over 80 learners (about 30 above their capacity). Most of the teachers had not received a salary for the previous year and the school was not a legal entity.
In 2006, Sinenjongo is now a fully fledged High School, with a dynamic headmaster. They have new classrooms, a state of the art computer facility and their first grade 12's wrote their final exams in November. This was a very proud moment for the school. Living Maths, together with the vision of Investec and the support of Rotary (Blouberg), Sinenjongo has grown beautifully.
In 2007, we aimed to to improve the grade 12 math results. The overall grade 12 results improved by over 21% from the previous year! Well done to our learners.
In 2008, we intend to improve the maths results further and reach the younger grades.
